“The Detroit”
An Original American Airlines Flagship
The Flagship Detroit Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the legacy of the DC-3. The goal of the Foundation is to continue to maintain and operate the Flagship Detroit as a flying tribute to the airplane that made passenger travel a viable form of public transportation and to honor the airline employees, past and present, who have made air travel the safest form of transportation in the world.

What Your Donation Can Buy:

The Curtiss-Wright Cyclone engine costs $60,000 for each overhaul, which comes due about every 10 years.

There are 18 spark plugs in these engines and they are changed annually. Cost: $20/plug or $360 every year - Per Engine.

These thirsty engines use 100LowLead aviation fuel at the rate of 100 gallons per hour. Today this fuel sells for $6 to $9 per gallon.

Radial engines use oil for cooling. Our well-maintained engines use about 1 gallon per flight hour. The oil costs $25 per gallon currently.

What may not be obvious is that to keep these engines from losing parts, we use something called Safety Wire.  This keeps every bolt from vibrating off and causing the unthinkable.

(This small can of Safety Wire can costs about $10)

So, no matter what amount you are able to help with, there is one thing certain...  It will definitely be used to help keep this classic aircraft airworthy. By clicking below, you can do just that and remember - the Flagship Detroit Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization.
